Khalid W. BAJWA, PhD's Summary
Architect | Urbanist Dr. Khalid W. BAJWA has experiences for projects ranging from dwellings and individual buildings to large complexes, medium-rise towers, housing settlements, landscape schemes, urban design, and urban planning. As a critical practitioner in the fields of Architecture & Urbanistics his area of expertise is Research by Design in addressing the challenges of objective and composed development by inventing designs that conceptualise Development as a Spatial Constellation in relation with its overall Image, Structure and Functioning. He is committed to refine his conviction that Design, Spatial (re)Formation, involves Analysis – understanding Spatial Crystallization through critical practice and research. He explores design issues of “Scale and Memory”, “Tissue and Typology”, and “Density and Livability” in search of Design Heuristics. As an academic his work hinges on the fields of Urban Analysis, History, and Planning but also does encompass issues of Modernity, Identity, Development, and Segregation. His works and initiatives have thematic focus on "Hybridity and Indigenous Modernities", "Development Standards for Sustainable Urban Model"; "Spatial Legacies"; and "Studio Pedagogy and its Didactics for Architectural Education". He graduated in architecture (B-Arch) from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan and did his post-graduation in Human Settlements – Urban Design & Planning (M-Arch) and doctorate in Architecture & Urban Design (PhD) from the University of Leuven (KULeuven), Belgium at the Department of Architecture, Urbanism, and Planning. He is Professor Architecture and Design in COMSATS, Lahore. Earlier, he worked as Associate Professor at the School of Architecture (SA), Beaconhouse National University (BNU), Lahore.

Dissertation: Development Conditions of Androon Shaher, Walled City of Lahore – Towards a Spatial Knowledge Base for Urban Design and Planning
This research examines the development conditions of the Walled City of Lahore, Pakistan. It develops a knowledge base by investigating the city from a space-society perspective. Currently, the Walled City is degenerating into an unliveable space. We understand that this condition is related with the overall image, structure and functioning of the city. Based on the position that the understanding of the city is critical for transforming it, this study uses three divergent fields – planning practice, urban history and theory, and empirical work – to generate a body of urban knowledge. It is knowledge of the relevance of its spatiality, materiality and sociality for inventing design.

Design Thesis: Urban Design Intervention for Schaarbeek/Evere, Brussels, Belgium

Design Thesis: Development of Lahore Canal as a social, cultural, and recreational spine of Lahore - An Urban Theatre: A city long extravaganza.
Unfortunately, neither the Lower Bari Duab - LBD - canal in Lahore has been able to contribute significantly to the overall urban richness nor it is able to develop civic and cultural activities. However, it is an important element in the urban structure of Lahore, running almost through the middle of the city. This project re-Evaluates and re-Interprets it to transform it into a vibrant development, adding to the city.
